How to make the most of your Bible Reading
How to get the Most out of Reading the Bible
All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
And is profitable for doctrine,
For instruction in righteousness.
II Timothy 3:16 (KJV)
This verse says that the whole Bible is useful for one of four things.
To help us understand what these four things really mean, let's look at them in plain English:
- Doctrine - something to believe
- Reproof - something to stop doing
- Correction - something to do better
- Instruction in righteousness - something to start doing.
After you have read your daily reading, we would encourage you to pause and ask God for what He wants you to
believe, what He wants you to stop doing, what He wants you to do better. As you pray that prayer, the words from
the Bible will work their way into your life and into your behavior.
It is also a good idea to pray at the beginning, before doing your daily reading, to ask God to teach you by the
Holy Spirit, and to show you the meaning of what you are reading. By praying at the beginning and at the end, your
Bible reading will be vital, alive, and will change your life.
Another suggestion is to write down key verses. This would be a verse that was particularly meaningful to you or
one that God really used to speak to you. You might also want to memorize this verse as a way of keeping God's Word
in your heart. Decide how you will respond to what God has shown you and then write this down in a notebook or
journal. This will help you to take action or check on your own growth as a disciple of Jesus.
Share with others, in words or in actions, what you are learning about God through the Bible.
