Sermon Title: God’s Passion for His faithful remnant. (Malachi 3:13-18)
Dearly Beloved,
Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
On the 20th of January 2021 – the world entered a new season with the inauguration of Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. as the 46th President of the United States of America.
Although the familiar sense of dignity and decency has been restored to America with His inauguration – and seemingly, along with much of the world - much remains uncertain.
We see in the news of how some people were relieved or even elated, that Trump’s time has come to an end; whilst others were so disillusioned and distraught that on the 6th of January 2021, as the U.S. Congress was conducting the counting of electoral college votes for the 2020 Presidential Election, they rioted and defiantly stormed the U.S. Capitol Building in an insurrection that left 5 people dead. This has resulted in a historic 2nd impeachment of a US President and serves as an ominous start to the new Presidency with Congress having to continue and finish up the work of dealing with the previous administration.
That such a horrific event could actually take place in the heart of US democracy shows us that we live today in a reality of uncertainty; an uncertainty that reverberates all around the world.
Much remains uncertain.
To think that the world would be more stable here on out, is a mistake.
To place any kind of hope that human governance is going to make things better, would be a bigger mistake.
The reality is that the system in which we have created for ourselves is both complex and corrupt; much like the nature of the human heart.
Regardless of our close ties, Canada was negatively impacted on the first day of the new presidency with one of President Biden’s first executive orders to cancel the Keystone Pipeline Project; a decision that would fundamentally affect thousands in Canada, starting with our neighbouring Province of Alberta, and likely cause a recession whilst the pandemic rages on.
The only certainty about the history and ongoing narrative of mankind is that much remains uncertain; and it will remain uncertain due to the defiant unwillingness of the human heart to acknowledge the certainty of Jesus Christ.
Historically, both Canada and the United States were founded around Christian principles with the establishment of socio-economic structures that evolved out of Judeo-Christian values: Biblical values.
The fact remains that - Christian principles are the formative paradigm of Western culture.
In 1921, the Founding Fathers’ of Canada declared the Latin phrase, “A Mari Us que Ad Mare”, which translates to “from sea to sea,” as the motto for the Canadian Coat of Arms, referencing Psalm 72:8 - “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.” This is just one of many Bible verses that are etched throughout the Parliament buildings all around Canada.
This last Wednesday, we observed the many Christian liturgical components and references during the Presidential inauguration.
Mr. Biden was sworn into office with his hand placed on a Bible that has been in his family for 121 years.
The poem by Amanda Gorman, with allusions to the prophet Jonah braving “the belly of the beast” ; and with references to “Scripture” telling “us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree” unafraid, and awaiting “just redemption”; along with numerous other Christian and biblical references – is an outright exhortation of healing and revival of the American nation.
The prayer by Fr. Leo O'Donovan – a long-time associate of the Bidens - mentioned “confessing sin, looking for renewal, being committed to care, and calling for the wisdom of Solomon.”
Then, there was the singing of Amazing Grace, by Garth Brooks; who encouraged all in attendance to sing the third verse corporately.
And of course, there were the references to Christian themes of healing, reconciliation and transformation in the New President’s inaugural speech, who in particular said, "And I promise you that this, as the Bible said, weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning. We will get through this together."
Will we really get through this together?
Or perhaps the question that we must contemplate ought to be:
What is it we are going to get through together?
What does it really mean to live in a place and time, where it seems to be so ‘Christian’, and yet, be faced with so much resistance, conflict and oppression against the very Christian principles that these two countries were founded upon?
Even during the inauguration, pluralism reared its demonic head.
What was touted as the ‘benediction’ for the inauguration proceedings ended with the words, “to your glory, majesty, dominion and power, forever, hallelujah; glory; hallelujah; the strong name of our collective faith amen.”
What does it mean to end a prayer like that?
What is this prayer really directed to?
There was no mention of our Lord Jesus, nor His Salvific Grace in the entire so-called ‘benediction’; and it certainly did not conclude in the Name of Jesus (Ref: John 14:13-14), or even offer any suggestion that this prayer is directed to the “God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ref: Romans 15:6, 2 Corinthians 1:3, Ephesians 1:3).
It is clear that at the highest levels of governments in these lands; is a readiness to bow down before false gods.
This is the insidiousness of the religiosity we find ourselves in today.
It was a prayer that seemed ‘Christian’, but it was a prayer that had nothing to do with Christ.
Earlier this year, there was a U.S. Congressman’s miscarried attempt to be inclusive while leading the House in a ‘sort of’ prayer during the swearing-in of the 117th Congress on a Sunday, when he wrapped up a prayer in the House of Representatives with the words: “We ask it in the name of the monotheistic God,”, then goes on to name a hindu deity (of which hinduism is a noted polytheistic religion) before saying, “and (the) god known by many names, many different faiths,” and concluding with, “amen, and awomen.”
“Amen, and awomen.”
Imagine this: even my spell-check complains angrily- with an emphatic, red underline - at the mistake of a clearly non-existent word.
Amen is certainly not a gendered word; it is not even English – but is derived from the Hebrew word āmēn, which is really encompassed in the words, “faith; trust; truth; certainty; truth; verily; let it be; may it come to pass; Praise the Lord!”
We are found – on this day, with many to come – in tragic, dark, and uncertain circumstances.
Such is the world we live in; and it is going to get worse.
But unlike the pandemic, the world’s rejection of Jesus Christ is not going to get better.
This is mindless inclusivism that is beyond foolish and desperate, it is foul and demonic.
Such mindless inclusivity is far from a manner of empathy, but an outright manifestation of evil that is symptomatic of those who desperately fear being irrelevant, being obscure and being canceled; at the expense of common sense, universal decency and time-tested morality.
‘Cancel culture’ is the cancer of present culture.
To be cancelled by society is infinitely better than to be cancelled from the “book of life”. (Revelation 20:15)
Let me be clear.
To be cancelled by society for standing up for the biblical notions of life, marriage, family and society established in God’s Salvation through Christ; is infinitely better than to be found impure, shameful and deceitful in the sight of God - cancelled from the “Lamb’s book of life”. (Revelation 21:27)
In Canada especially, there is an increasing sense that the very human rights that is so clearly established upon the Biblical principles of God’s love for the world is accorded to everyone else, but Christians - who publicly speak to God’s love, along with His laws, His divine design of all Creation, His wrath, His Mercy and His Plan for Salvation.
An account was shared regarding how a small group of muslim parents insisted that the school remove members of Gideons International – whose primary ministry is distributing the Bible free of charge - on the basis that they might influence their children with ‘Christian’ values. The school conceded to their demands and the Gideons were disallowed from the school grounds to meet even with the Christian children. Subsequently, this same group of muslim parents was allowed access to the school to explain their religious practises to students.
Talk about the gross injustice towards Christians, entrenched in the deliberate imbalance of influence; by those who relish in the advantages and benefits of living in a Christian society, but is foolish enough to think that it may be sustained without Christianity.
However.
Although much remains uncertain, this much is certain - Christ is the sole Sustainer of our faith (Ref: Hebrews 12:2); and we must remain resolutely certain of Christ; our relationship, our understanding and our identity in Him.
Our present reality of uncertainty must never become uncertainty of our reality in Jesus Christ; the reality that Jesus is the Lord, Saviour and God of all; and that He is coming back to judge the living and the dead, and in-break His eternal kingdom. (Ref: 2 Tim 4:1) We – who profess Christ as Lord and Saviour - must desire for His Kingdom to come; and we must desire to be judged because it would mean that we would see our Lord Jesus Christ face to face! The depravity of man is inevitable; and Creation as we know it will conclude. Our Lord Jesus prepares us for this eventuality in Luke 21:25-36 25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars.
On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.
31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
32 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
33 Heaven and earth will pass away (and all nations and governments) , but my words will never pass away.
34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.
35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.
36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
What does it mean that “there will be signs in the sun, moon and stars”; or that “nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea”; and that “people will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken”?
It simply means that in the grand scheme of the eventual, cataclysmic return of our Lord Jesus Christ, our oppressors are ‘small potatoes’… minutely insignificant. And what they are doing to us is nothing compared to the moving and shaking of the universe inanticipation of His Return.
What must constantly and consistently concern us is that we “may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
What we must do is to resolutely keep your focus on Christ!
In everything – trials, tribulations, sickness, disease and even, death – keep your focus on Christ!
Do not raise your expectations on human governments making the world a better place; you will be disappointed. And as with everything, the higher your expectations; the greater your disappointment.
Do not place any hope on human governments, for they will pass away; in fact, all nations will pass away at the dawn of Christ’s Kingdom. (Ref: Daniel 7:14)
1 Peter 1:24-25 presents this reality to us:
““All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And this is the word that was preached to you.:
Every person who does not receive and believe the word of the Gospel is destined to wither and fall.
Israel – God’s chosen nation – notwithstanding.
When we read the Bible about the nation of Israel, we discover that as long as the Israelites honored the Lord, destroyed idol temples, and kept God’s commandments, the Lord was actively involved in their lives and even defended them when other nations rose against them.
Moses heralded the first instance of God’s divine defense and protection over Israel with these words, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:13-14)
What followed was the historical and phenomenal parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22) and in the aftermath, the destruction of the Pharaoh’s mighty army. (Exodus 14:26-28)
In stark contrast to this divine intervention, we see examples of God withholding His hand from Israel in her defiance against Him, resulting in Israel’s uncomely defeat and destruction at the hands of their enemies.
2 Kings 24 marks the end of God’s covering over Israel as they defied Him, built temples to idols, and lived in wickedness. They had desecrated the temple of God and ignored His Laws for generations.
They had ignored, often killed, God’s prophets who called them to repentance. (Ref: Luke 11:27-28)
Time and again, God warned them. And when they stubbornly rejected Him, He released judgement upon them through invasions resulting in captivity of the Israelites and destruction of Israel’s cities. (Ref: 2 Kings 24:12-14)
Sin brings about the wrath of God; and Israel experienced firsthand, both His divine blessings from their obedience to Him, and judgments out of their wickedness towards Him.
God desired to bless Israel; but they chose to step out of His covering – resulting in lost blessings.
The Apostle Paul warns us sternly in Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.’
Many nations of biblical times are non-existent now, having brought God’s judgment upon themselves for their wickedness.
Sodom, Gomorrah (Genesis 18:20). Edom (Jeremiah 49:17-22). Babylon (Jeremiah 51), Assyria (Zephaniah 2:13-15) were once great cities - destroyed by God for their wickedness in His sight.
There are no present descendants of the Hittites (Exodus 23:23), the Philistines (Zephaniah 2:5), or the Moabites(Zephaniah 2:8-10) who have been repeatedly defiant against God.
God prospered Israel when they revered Him and obeyed His Commandments, and bestowed upon them a rich land that was “flowing with milk and honey” (Numbers 14:8) – promising to provide and protect them.
Their obedience to God would have guaranteed His divine Presence, Providence and Protection; instead, they chose to follow the wickedness of the nations around them.
For their sins of idolatry, sacrilege and harlotry, God spoke against Israel.
“I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.” (Ezekiel 5:17)
Know that those who fear the Lord, and who submit to His instructions “will spend their days in prosperity, and their descendants will inherit the land” (Psalm 25:12-13); and “the righteous are rewarded with good things.” (Proverbs 13:21)
But, know also that material prosperity is not evidence of God’s blessing upon a person or a nation.
Evil kings and nations have existed in worldly successes as well; all, in the scheme of the Will of God to set apart for Him a holy people.
When we honor the Lord and obey His commands, we reap the benefits of living honorably and righteous n His sight; blameless before Him and faithfully walking with Him.
A nation that honors God’s Laws reaps that benefit as well. History shows that those that do not are often destroyed from within; for self-destruction is inherent in a being who is determined to live apart from the Creator.
God created us to commune with Him, to be holy and righteous as He is; and gives us His Commandments solely to our benefit and blessing.
In our gratuitous obedience to Him, we live completely blessed with infinite and eternal love, joy, peace and life; free from any and all bondages that suppress and subvert us – schemes of the devil devised to “steal, kill and destroy”. (John 10:10a)
Living in obedience to God protects us from the temptations and fate of the evil one.
But, when a person or a nation turns away from the true God and becomes their own god, the Lord removes His covering and allows that person or nation to experience the world as they have created and chose to live in – a world destined to “pass away”.
We find ourselves in a truly unique time in history where we are living in lands that have been unmistakably formed by Christian paradigms, only to turn away from God, His Laws and His Salvation within one generation.
This nation will not last. Every nation around us will not last. Earthly kingdoms does not, and will not last.
And that is why we must place our hope only on the One who is called, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:7)
Christ is the child born, and given to us; to whose shoulders will rest the eternal Kingdom of God. (Ref: Isaiah 9:7)
Isaiah 9:8 further reveals:
“Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.
The zeal (passion) of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
The PASSION of the Lord Almighty will fulfill and establish His eternal Kingdom; and this same passion will establish the steps and destiny for those who are faithful to Him.
The greatness – the supremacy – of His government and peace will last forevermore accomplished by the passion of the Lord God Almighty.
Church, this is going to happen.
Christ will return.
And with His return, His Passion will inbreak His eternal Kingdom – a kingdom that is not upheld by fallen human sensibilities or incoherent and unjust human laws; for God will HIMSELF uphold His Kingdom in His brand of Justice and Righteousness for all eternity.
Know that God is passionately in love with you, and passionate in His desire that you be restored into His eternal Kingdom.
Place your hope solely in Jesus!
Today, I would like everyone to know that God knows the evil that is happening, and remains passionate for those who are faithful to Him.
His justice will prevail, and those who call on His Name will be saved.
God knows exactly who belongs to Him and promises to reward them, even when all others have turned away.
Do not be mistaken.
To doubt God and the reality of His Kingdom - is wicked arrogance.
To feel discouraged and question your Christian impulse to love and serve God - is wicked arrogance.
To believe that those who are defiant to God’s commands will escape the judgment and wrath of God - is wicked arrogance.
Stop sinning against the Lord in wilful arrogance and repent!
Malachi 3:13-18 assures us that God is watching – for He is Omnipresence (all-present), Omniscient (all-knowing), Omnipotent (all-powerful). God knows all that is happening, and at the very end, He will judge - all - righteously.
“13 “You have spoken arrogantly against me,” says the Lord.
“Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’
14 “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners (in the constant posture of repentance) before the Lord Almighty?
15 But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”
The Faithful Remnant
16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.
A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name.
17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him.
18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”
Do you desire to be God’s treasured possession – His faithful remnant?
Stop doubting the Will of God to call to account every deed of every person in all of Creation.
Stop your wicked arrogance in thinking that serving God is futile; that constantly obeying God and remaining in the posture of repentance before Him is frivolous and gainless.
Stop your wicked arrogance in believing that worldly successes are blessings of God, or that in their open defiance against the living God, evil-doers will escape the fiery lake of burning sulfur (Ref: Revelation 20:14, 21:8).
The Lord is God!
Fear the Lord; worship Him alone! Love the Lord, serve God alone!
God exhorts us in Isaiah 41:10:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Be faithful to Him; fight false and wicked expectations, anxieties and uncertainties of life – the fears of life - with faith in Jesus.
Fight fear with faith in God – for He is with you and He loves you with an everlasting love (Ref: Jeremiah 31:3);
Fight dismay with devotion to God – for He will strengthen you, help you and uphold you with His Righteousness.
Church, know this well.
Even when a nation turns away from God, individuals within that nation can still follow Him and know that their names are written in God’s scroll of remembrance.
Be forewarned, “anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)
Even when our nation turns away from God, do not feel helpless, do not feel hopeless – for Christ is both our help and our hope – and when we remain close to Him, we remain in His passionate love and passionate desire for us to be His treasured possessions – His faithful remnant.
Yes. Much remains uncertain.
But with total faith in Jesus and utter devotion to Him, we are certain to overcome all fear and dismay surrounding our lives and circumstances; and remain in His passionate love and desire for us - to be His treasured possession; His Faithful Remnant; His Holy People – His chosen Nation, who will inherit His Eternal Kingdom.
In the prevailing age of uncertainty, know that God is:
PASSIONATE about His Faithful Remnant; and
PASSIONATE in His love and desire to restore them into His eternal Kingdom.
Are you willing to be part of His Faithful Remnant?
Are you willing to be part of the body of Christ?
KEEP YOUR FOCUS SOLELY ON JESUS
Fight fear with faith in Jesus; and fight dismay with devotion to Jesus.
Remain in His passion – now and forevermore.
Shalom.
Let us pray.
Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Name.
Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done; on earth, as it is in heaven.
In the uncertainty of the world around us, thank You Lord Jesus for being my Certainty.
In the unbridled injustice against the church, grant us courage, strength, resolve and wisdom to stand against the forces of evil and stand strong in Your Holy Name.
Lord Jesus, I declare that You are the sole Sustainer of my faith and that through the Power of the Holy Spirit, remain resolutely certain that You are my Saviour, Deliverer and the King of all Creation.
Even though governments insidiously bow down before false gods, may Your church be resolutely in loving and serving You alone!
Holy Spirit, grant me the divine insight through the present reality of uncertainty, that I will always remain certain in the reality that Jesus is the Lord, Saviour and God of all; and that He is coming back to judge the living and the dead, and in-break His eternal kingdom. (Ref: 2 Tim 4:1)
Daily deepen my faith and desire for Your glorious return, Lord Jesus; that I may live in constant anticipation of the inbreaking of Your Kingdom.
May my heart never be weighed down with the anxieties of life; but rather, may I always be “on the watch” and in prayer that I may be able to stand before You, Lord Jesus!
Holy Spirit, in my daily trials, tribulations, sickness, disease and even, death; help me to resolutely keep my focus on the Lord Jesus Christ!
Help me stand firm and see the deliverance that You will bring me.
Lord, fight for Your Church; and thank You for the revelation that we need only to be still before You. (Ref: Exodus 14:13-14)
Help us solely and wholly honor You and obey Your Commands; help us live honorably and righteous in Your sight, faithfully walking with You all the days of our lives.
Lord, I believe that Your Passion alone will fulfill and establish Your eternal Kingdom; and Your Passion alone will establish the steps and destiny of Your faithful remnant.
I desire to live in Your passionate love, Lord Jesus; I desire to live in Your passion to inbreak Your eternal Kingdom.
Help me daily to grow in faithfulness and passion for You, and for Your Kingdom!
Help me to “consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:8)
Lord, You know the evil and injustice happening in the world; and against Your people.
Thank You, for Your divine assurance that You remain passionate for those who are faithful to You.
I believe that Your justice will prevail; and believe that we – who call on Your Name – will be saved!
Even though all others turn away, I will follow You, Lord Jesus!
Forgive my wicked arrogance when I doubt You and doubt the reality of Your Kingdom.
Forgive my wicked arrogance when I feel disappointed and question my purpose in life to love and serve God.
Forgive my wicked arrogance when I think that those who defy You will escape Your judgement and wrath.
I know that You will ultimately call to account every deed of every person and judge in perfect righteousness.
I repent of my wickedness; thank You, Lord, for Your mercy and forgiveness.
May my name be written in the scroll of remembrance; and may I live in the deepest knowledge, belief and reality that I am Your treasured possession; Your faithful remnant.
Holy Spirit, teach me to fight fear with faith in Jesus – for I know that You are with me every step of the way, and that You love me with an everlasting love.
Teach me to fight dismay and depression with devotion to Jesus – for I know You will strengthen me, help me, and uphold me with Your Righteousness.
Even though our nation turns away from You, we will not feel helpless nor hopeless; for You, O Lord, are both our Help and Hope.
We remain in You, Lord Jesus; and in doing so, know that, we remain the gratuitous recipients of Your Passion to inbreak Your Kingdom.
Holy Spirit, make this our reality: that with total faith in Jesus and utter devotion to You, we are certain to overcome all fear and dismay surrounding our lives and circumstances; and remain in Your passionate love and desire for us - to be Your treasured possession; Your Faithful Remnant; Your Holy People – Your chosen Nation, who will inherit Your Eternal Kingdom.
Help me live – from this day till eternity – as Your faithful remnant; as part of the body of the Lord Jesus Christ.
My focus in solely on You, Lord Jesus!
I choose this day to remain in Your passion – now and forevermore!
I thank You and pray all these in the Name of our King, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Dearly Beloved,
Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
On the 20th of January 2021 – the world entered a new season with the inauguration of Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. as the 46th President of the United States of America.

““All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
Fight fear with faith in God – for He is with you and He loves you with an everlasting love (Ref: Jeremiah 31:3);
Amen.
