Pentecost Sermon: Born To Speak God’s Language (The undoing of confusion)
1 "Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar [Babylonia] and settled there.
3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.”
They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.
6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
7 Come, let us go down and confuse (melt) their language so they will not understand each other.”
8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 That is why it was called Babel[In Hebrew, sounds like word for ‘confused’]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world.
From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth." (Genesis 11:1-9)
Dearly Beloved,
Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Risen Savior, Jesus Christ!
Never underestimate your tongue; for it “has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21)
Mankind sinned against God.
Again.
This was a world which had “one language and a common speech” – a singular mindset – and a people who “found a plain in Shinar and settled there” in blatant defiance to the blessing of God given to Mankind through both Adam and Noah to “fill the earth” (Genesis 1:28, Genesis 9:1)
This was a world with a singular mindset to defy God.
Does this not sound familiar?
The tower of Babel is the story of unrestrained, false worship; in which, Man wickedly assumed full control of their lives, brazenly defying the Presence, Purposes and Power of God over them; and how God dealt with it.
It was common knowledge that God had promised to never destroy the world again by flood; and yet, Mankind exploited His Kindness, and His Word.
And this resulted in their sinful audacity to commit the combined sins of Adam, Cain and Noah’s peers – pride and independence, anger and murder, greed, violence and bloodlust.
Mankind’s attempt to formulate and establish their own salvation.
“They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”” (Genesis 11:3)
In their technological progress, Mankind wilfully distorted their understanding of God.
In the Ancient Near Eastern culture, a “tower that reaches to the heavens” represented a ‘gateway’ for the gods to come down to be amongst mankind; and was made possible only because with bricks held resiliently with tar, buildings were no longer limited through the use of natural stone cobbled together with tar.
Mankind was stipulating how they would relate to God; and were re-writing the rules of relationship with God.
The gateway was intended to incentivise God to come down for Man’s sole benefit; as opposed to drawing close to God in reverence and gratitude.
In flagrant contempt, Mankind violates the being and character of God - through believing that they may have access and relate to God on their own terms; that ‘worship’ was essentially Mankind meeting the needs of God.
Their ‘theology’ stipulates that through the tower and their ‘worship’, they would be divinely endowed with rich, worldly benefits from the gods – if their worship and sacrifices were acceptable and adequate.
At the very least, no blessing would pour forth.
But for the most part, an inadequate or unacceptable sacrifice would incur the hissy wrath of the gods who would might throw a temper, and smite in retribution – depending on their moods.
If the gods are happy, they would bestow Mankind with many worldly blessings; weather would be great, harvests would be plentiful, no droughts, famines or plagues, wars would be won.
If not, times would be tough as Mankind finds themselves on the naughty list of the gods.
The worship of the gods is a transaction for earthly benefits.
Mankind began to establish and formulate their own salvation and well-being; based on this heretic distortion that God emotes just like human beings, and like human beings - are easily susceptible to mood swings.
To “make a name for ourselves” (Genesis 11:3) reveals that the carnal desire within every human heart is power in the form of divine control – where gods can be manipulated and even dominated, for earthly benefits and purposes.
False worship is not about being one with God; it is all about making God one with us, and then in time, one like us.
In this contempt for God, we observe the beginnings of the loss of distinction between the divine and the mortal; between God and Man.
The loss of sacred distinction between God and human beings is the root of paganism; and is the slippery slope that compels the tragic loss of distinction between humans and animals, men and women, husbands and wives, and even between good and evil, holy and unholy, life and death.
And since, there is no distinction, there never was the identities to begin with.
The lack of distinction results in loss of identity.
And in the case of the lack of distinction between God and Man; the catastrophic and categorical loss of human identity would only result.
The results are the vehement conflicts of imbalance, injustice and injunctions of basic human morals and rights that we observe so brazenly celebrated in society today.
When “the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building” and said, “if as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them” (Genesis 11:5-6) – He was far from nervous; and remained in immense love for His human creation.
This was truly divine intervention - that the Lord confused (melted) “their language so they will not understand each other” (Genesis 11:7); thus, preventing Mankind from falling unrestrained into further sin.
In a single act of divine intervention, the Lord stopped Mankind’s wilful violation of His Sovereignty and Loving Character - a truly grievous sin certain to doom them to be forever separated from Him; and compelled all of humanity to fulfill His Convenantal Mandate to “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis 1:28, Genesis 9:1-2)
The key point of the story of Babel is that God is always present to us; even if the world is a rebellious, stubborn, and defiant world.
Who is this God of all Creation?
He would have to be the One who had both the power to confuse Man’s common language - scattering them over the face of the earth; and the power to undo the confusing of language – thus, gathering them from over the face the earth to build unto Him a true temple of worship.
Did our God undo the confusion of language that prevented people from understanding one another, and thus further sinning against Him?
He most certainly did!
The Divine Reversal at Babel; the Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!
16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” (Acts 2:1-21)
Church, understand this well.
Confusing Mankind’s language - was God’s act of divine Mercy.
Reversing that confusion and conforming our language to His - was God’s act of divine Grace.
Recall Genesis 11:6:
“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”
As a people who lives solely for God, praying and speaking in tongues as enabled by the Holy Spirit, nothing we plan to do – which is, to fulfill His Sovereign Will – will be impossible for us!
In His Power to fulfill His Sovereign Will, there is simply no confusion.
We may think our nation is hopeless, or that our situation is hopeless; not anymore - if and only if we are all baptized in the Holy Spirit and are willing to pray in tongues as the Spirit enables us.
Born-again to speak God’s Language
We are born-again by the Holy Spirit to speak God’s Kingdom language; through which, we would be transcendently clear in our divine purpose in living utterly in the Power of God to prepare the world for His Coming Kingdom.
To pray in tongues – God’s Kingdom language – is to embrace the very culture of God’s Coming and Eternal Kingdom.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the divine reversal of confusion upon Mankind at Babel - that not only affected our language, but our culture, mindset and paradigm of evil; realigning and restoring the Spirit-filled believer on the pathway of God’s Will and Holiness, becoming more aware, more knowledgeable, having a greater faith and understanding of the mysteries of God’s love and His Gospel.
All of which began with a profound willingness to first surrender control of their lips, and then consequently, our lives unto God.
To truly be His People, our minds must have divine clarity regarding God’s Will and His Coming Kingdom; and our hearts’ must have absolute willingness to surrender our bodies, and spirits to the Holy Spirit’s Baptism.
For this is our Commission; our sole purpose in life. (Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-18, Acts 1:8)
The Holy Spirit and His Power to pray in tongues and thus, tap into the Spirit’s gifts to witness for our Lord Jesus Christ is God’s gift to us; not for us to keep, but for us to bless the world with the divine insight of things to come – the return of Christ, the judgement of the wicked and the imminence of God’s Kingdom.
May the Holy Spirit and His Power to pray in tongues be upon you; bestowing upon you the true essence and purpose of the born-again believer of Christ Jesus, our Lord!
Shalom.
Let us pray.
Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Name.
Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done; on earth, as it is in heaven.
Holy Spirit, I ask that You would fall upon me and baptize me fully in Your Presence, Purpose and Power!
I love You, O Lord; help me grow in faith and love with You!
Draw me close to You, Holy Spirit; till I am fully immersed in Your Purposes and Power – that I would live in divine clarity – mind, spirit and body - of Your Gospel and serve our Lord Jesus as His Witness in preparing the world for God’s coming Kingdom.
Lord Jesus, I pray that You would pour forth Your Holy Spirit upon the church.
Just as You did for the disciples, fill every born-again believer with Your Holy Power and enable us with the divine gift of praying in tongues (Ref: Acts 2:4); that in Your Power, we will pray in new tongues (Ref: Mark 16:17) - for our families, communities and for our Nation.
Increase our faith in You, Lord Jesus – and grant us a heart that is utterly willing to surrender our tongues to You in our prayers; that we may experience firsthand how “the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26)
Lord Jesus, I desire to be truly ‘born-again’!
Grant me Your language of prayer – for I desire to live wholly in the Sovereign Will of our heavenly Father; through which, I would be transcendently clear in my divine purpose of living utterly in Your Power to prepare the world for Your Coming Kingdom.
Lord, I give You my voice; because I know that You intercede for “God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” (Romans 8:27)
Grant me the assurance and obedience to open my mouth; in fullest faith that You will fill it with heavenly tongues; enabling me to pray in the Holy Spirit.
I believe that when You baptize me in the Holy Spirit, the divine reversal of confusion at Babel has taken place in my life; and that I have been realigned and restored to the pathway of Your Will and Holiness where I have become more aware, more knowledgeable, having a greater faith and understanding of the mysteries of Your Love and Your Gospel.
Yes, Holy Spirit, grant me the divine willingness to first, and foremost, surrender control of my lips and heart to You.
I acknowledge that when I do, my life of eternal service unto the Living God will supernaturally follow.
May I daily tap into Your divine gifts through allowing Your enabling of my lips to pray in tongues – that my life would truly be a blessing to the world with the divine insight of things to come - the return of Christ, the judgement of the wicked and the imminence of God’s Kingdom; thereby living out the true essence and purpose of the born-again believer of Christ Jesus, our Lord!
I thank You and pray all these in the Name of our Risen King, Lord, Savior and Spirit-Baptiser, Jesus Christ. Amen.
