Sermon Title: THE GREATNESS OF GOD - THE BASIS FOR OUR REST
Dearly Beloved,
Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
When we enter God’s Rest today; we are essentially accepting God’s invitation to become citizens of God’s Eternal Kingdom today.
In utter obedience, every child of God must “make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their (Israel’s) example of disobedience.” (Hebrews 4:11)
The Christian life is entirely, and unreservedly, established upon God’s Rest, and must be ineradicably marked by trust and obedience unto the Lord.
Failure to enter God’s Rest today is outright disobedience; of which, the consequence is the drink of “the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” (Revelation 14:6-11)
You have heard it said before, and it is true.
There shall be no rest for the wicked.
As for you and I, we are called – as part of the people of God – to “patient endurance”, remaining in His rest; trusting and loving Him so much that we would be utterly obedient to Him, and keep “God’s commands and remain faithful to Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12)
This is important – for this sets us apart from the world doomed to perpetual restlessness; “consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.” (Revelation 21:8)
God reveals this to us plainly:
“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”
“Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” (Revelation 14:13)
Our rest in God must be present, for it to be eternal.
Those who fail to trust in Him today, will be judged as disobedient and live forever in the wrath of God.
The rest of your life begins right this moment; and so must every deed of your life be found wholly in God’s Rest.
There is no test for when we die to determine our suitability for the Kingdom of God; that test begins right now.
Enter God’s Rest right now.
Repent. Eternal Living. Stewardship. Trust.
You know that which you must daily undertake to be part of the people of God’s Eternal Kingdom.
Such is the life of the shepherd and king David.
His was a lifetime striving to be found in God’s Rest.
For him, the basis of rest in simply found in the Greatness of God.
“10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,
“Praise be to you, Lord,
the God of our father Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.
12 Wealth and honor come from You;
You are the ruler of all things.
In Your hands are Strength and Power
to exalt and give strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give You thanks,
and praise Your glorious name.
14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?
Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.”
(1 Chronicles 29:10-14)
Do you truly believe in the greatness of our Lord?
It all comes down to this.
Is this your truth?
Do you simply, resolutely and conscientiously believe that God is great?
The Greatness of God is the basis for our rest.
Plain and simple.
Rest comes from the recognition of the Greatness of our Eternal God; the greatness of His Love, His Power, His Glory, His Splendor, His Majesty, His Supreme Rule and Reign over all things; despite what the world might believe.
As this ageless hymn exhorts us:
“Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder;
Thy works throughout the universe displayed.”
You need to ask yourself:
Why do you doubt?
Are your eyes looking in the right direction?
Are your ears hearing the right Voice?
Does your heart belong to the right Person?
We doubt and disobey God because our hope remains earth-locked; and not Kingdom-bound.
Rest in the Greatness of God!
When faced with any circumstance and challenge, always begin by believing and proclaiming the greatness of God; and you will find yourself in God’s Rest.
War, disaster, sickness and death will happen, but it is never the end.
Only Christ is “the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13)
God is always in control; and in Christ, you will always remain in His Rest.
Shalom.
Let us pray.
Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Name.
Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done; on earth, as it is in heaven.
Holy Spirit, grant me the courage, strength, resolve and wisdom to keep my eyes, ears and heart on Christ alone – that my life is daily and forever found in God’s Rest.
I believe in the Greatness of Your Love and Power, O Lord; may I love, trust and obey You all the days of my life.
Indeed, I will praise You O Lord in the presence of the whole earth, saying,
Praise be to You, Lord, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.
Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is Yours.

May my soul sing forever to You, my Saviour and God: “How Great Thou Art!”
Lord I rest in You, now and forevermore.
I thank You and pray all these in the Name of our King, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
